According to Christine Yano, curator of an upcoming exhibit on Hello Kitty at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, Sanrio considers Hello Kitty to be a human girl1. She is a gijinka, which is a personification or anthropomorphization of a Japanese Bobtail cat .
